What's in the Air at Your Local Ice Arena?
Project Overview
This short documentary was made in collaboration with faculty and students from the Bachelor of Environmental Public Health program, showcasing a real environment that the students may one day be working in. The video discusses that while arenas are essential for sports and leisure, they also pose unique risks to indoor air quality. The use of ice-resurfacing equipment, combined with limited ventilation in these enclosed spaces, can lead to elevated levels of harmful pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, posing potential health risks to athletes, staff, and spectators.
Public health inspectors play a crucial role in addressing these risks by conducting risk assessments to determine the extent to which ice arenas have adopted best practices, providing education to operators, and responding to health concerns.
